ITSI hosts "For Our Babies"

Mark your calendars! August 14, 2012--Indianapolis will be the site for the "kick-off" of a national campaign that will promote public policy to improve healthy development for babies, conception to age three years. "For Our Babies" is a national movement promoting healthy development in U.S. children from conception to age 3. We advocate for the types of environments, experiences, and relationships that infants and toddlers need in order to thrive.

J. Ronald Lally, Co-Director of WestEd's Center for Child and Family Studies, will present "First Things First: Why Is It So Important to Start With Babies?", in which he will address issues like the difficulty and expense and detriment to children, families, communities, and the nation when healthy development does not take place in the first three years.

Autism Today - A six-part series on PBS NewsHour

Robert MacNeil is the co-founder of the PBS NewsHour and the grandfather of Nick, a 6-year old boy with Autism. April 18 through 26, MacNeil will host Autism Today, a six-part series covering Autism issues from a variety of angles.

April 18: Autism as a whole body experience. MacNeil brings viewers along on a visit with his daughter and grandson Nick in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to see how Autism affects the whole family. Nick experiences autism not just as a disorder in brain development but also as physical ailments affecting the whole body.

April 19: Autism Prevalence. At the UC Davis MIND Institute in Sacramento, California, MacNeil sees the wide range of different behaviors that comprise the Autism Spectrum. Anthropologist Richard Grinker argues that the rising numbers of children with Autism is explained because conditions previously given other names are now included in the Autism Spectrum.

April 20: Autism Causes. Robert MacNeil speaks with four leading researchers: Dr. Gerald Fischbach of the Simons Foundation, Dr. David Amaral of the MIND Institute, Dr. Martha Herbert of Harvard University and Dr. Craig Newschaffer of Drexel University.

April 21: Autism Treatment. MacNeil visits two schools in New York - a public school in the Bronx teaching 700 children with Autism and a charter school created in Manhattan as a model of possibilities in educating children with Autism.

April 25: Adults with Autism. Although federal law mandates educational services for children with Autism, there are virtually no services when they become adults. MacNeil profiles Zachary Hamrick in Mahwah, New Jersey, about to turn 21.

April 26: Autism Policy. The NewsHour series ends with a discussion of the public policy issues raised in the series with a panel of experts including: Dr. Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Catherine Lord, Professor of Psychology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Michigan

Speak Your Mind!

SPEAK YOUR MIND!

Rate your community’s implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act!

People with disabilities, their family members, and their advocates are invited to complete the 2010 ADA POLL, a survey about how Indiana communities are doing with implementation of the ADA. It’s important that your voices are heard when accessibility and discrimination issues are being addressed in your community! So don’t delay – let us know what you have to say!

The 2010 ADA POLL is available online at: www.ThePollingPlace.org.

It is also available in alternative formats – see below

The ADA has been in effect since 1990 - nearly 20 years have passed for communities to remove physical, programmatic, and attitudinal barriers that prevent people with disabilities from becoming active participating citizens. Progress has been made, but there is still need for further compliance. The 2010 ADA POLL asks Indiana citizens to identify how they view current implementation of the ADA in their own communities. Here is your opportunity to provide opinions and ideas about where to improve accessibility!

The results of the 2010 ADA POLL will be used to "grade" your community +on its response to the ADA and will become a tool to educate policy makers, administrators, and the general public about the ADA. We hope that you will join us in this effort to learn more about community responses to the ADA.

To request the survey form in an alternative format, or for additional information, contact Dr. Vicki Pappas by phone: 1-800-825-4733 or e-mail: beheard@indiana.edu.

The 2010 ADA POLL is being conducted by the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, in conjunction with the Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities, Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, and the Great Lakes ADA Center.

Non-Formal CDA Class Being Offered in Wabash County

Is the non-formal Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) at Child Care Solutions a good match for you?

Assess your needs...

  • I am an Indiana resident
  • I am 18 years old or older
  • I have a high school diploma or GED
  • I am currently employed in a licensed, registered, or legally exempt early care and education setting
  • In the past 5 years, I have had at least 480 hours of experience working in a child care setting
  • I have thought about getting my CDA, but the idea of going back to school doesn't appeal to me
  • I am looking for a way to pursue an education in early childhood, but cannot commit to a full-time degree program
  • I find that not having a CDA is preventing me from achieving my professional goals
  • I need a CDA to achieve a higher level on Paths to QUALITY, the statewide quality rating system for child care
  • I don't do well with tests or being graded and the non-formal CDA offers no tests and no grades!
  • I want to get the training I need and strengthen my skills in a supportive environment
  • I want to build relationships and networking opportunities with fellow CDA candidates
  • I would like to prepare the CDA portfolio as I go through the program
  • I would like class at times that are convenient for me
  • I need affordable, professional development (out-of-pocket cost is only $100 payable in four payments of $25.00)
T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education and Compensation Helps)
Early Childhood INDIANA

The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project serves as an umbrella for educational scholarship opportunities for people working in licensed, registered, or legally exempt child care centers and homes in Indiana.

The T.E.A.C.H. project design is a partnership model, which requires the sharing of expenses between the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project, the sponsoring child care program, and the scholarship recipient.

Indiana, as well as most states, is experiencing a child care staffing crisis. The single most important determinant of child care quality is the presence of consistent, well-trained, and well-compensated child care providers.

Purpose:
  • Improve the quality of early childhood education in child care centers, family child care homes, and registered ministries. Promote professional development of the early childhood workforce by increasing educational levels, increasing compensation, and decreasing staff turnover.
Scholarship:
  • T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA covers partial costs to help with the costs of college tuition, books, and travel. With some scholarship models, recipients also receive paid release time. Scholarships are based on the principle of partnership between the scholarship recipient, the sponsoring child care program, and the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project, all sharing the cost.
Education:
  • In return for receiving a scholarship, each scholarship recipient must complete a certain amount of education, in the form of college coursework, during a prescribed contract period.
Compensation:
  • All scholarship recipients receive increased compensation in the form of a bonus or raise, after completing a certain amount of coursework following the contract period.
Commitment:
  • Recipients make a commitment to remain in the sponsoring child care program or the field of early childhood for 6 months to one year beyond the contract period, depending on the scholarship model.
Eligibility:
  • Applicant must work a minimum number of hours per week in a licensed, registered, or legally exempt early childhood setting.
  • Applicants must have the sponsorship of their employing child care program
  • Earn less than $12.00 per hour as a teacher
  • Earn less than $15.00 per hour as a director or family child care provider
How do I get more information or apply for a scholarship?

Applications can be requested several ways:
  1. Call to request a specific application at toll-free 800-657-7577
  2. Request information from the T.E.A.C.H. section of the IAEYC website at www.iaeyc.org

Asthma: What is it and what can I do?

Asthma is a pretty common occurrence, being diagnosed in about 1 in every 10 children. Since it affects and presents differently in every child, it is important to know what we can do to prevent flare ups.

First, asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects the airways. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing (a whistling or squeaky sound during breathing), chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Common stimuli that can set off asthma are allergens, irritants, respiratory infections, and physical exercise. It is very important to know if a child in your care has asthma. Talk with the parents about what stimuli set off their child’s asthma. Also, make sure that you have talked with the parents about treatment, as well as having a doctor’s note about any medications that are used and how to use them.

Here are some ways that you can help children to avoid asthma flare ups while in your care. Reduce exposure to pets, definitely keeping them out of sleeping areas; keep bathrooms, kitchens and basements well aired and regularly cleaned (reduces mold); do NOT smoke or allow smoking inside your facility; wash blankets and bedding in hot water weekly (130 degrees, because dust mites do not survive at that temperature); do not use room deodorizers (plug ins); avoid wearing strong perfumes. Now that we are into the cold weather season, the cold air can prompt a flare up for some children. Help them by having them wear a scarf or turtleneck over their mouth and nose.

Information taken from and available at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

Updating Your Liability Insurance

Promoting Excellence in
Early Childhood Education

School is starting. Is your professional liability coverage in place?

Don’t leave your personal finances at risk to a work-related lawsuit. The Educators Professional Liability Plan, sponsored by NAEYC, provides $1,000,000 in liability coverage for just $99 per year. That’s only 28 cents per day!
This plan pays defense costs in addition to liability claims, and it includes valuable job-protection benefits for you at no additional cost.

You can apply for coverage online in minutes at:
http://www.ftj.com/epli2009

Many educators think they are protected from lawsuits by the school that employs them, but that’s not always the case. Consider the facts:
• Not all schools have liability coverage for their employees.
• Those that do may not have enough coverage to protect all employees against all claims made during a given year.
• And your employer can decide not to defend you under its liability coverage.
That's right. There is risk involved in relying on an employer’s liability policy to protect you. Wouldn't you rather know you’re covered with your own $1,000,000 professional liability policy?
Application is easy. For more information or to apply online, visit the NAEYC website.
