Early Childhood INDIANA
The T.E.A.C.H. project design is a partnership model, which requires the sharing of expenses between the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project, the sponsoring child care program, and the scholarship recipient.
Indiana, as well as most states, is experiencing a child care staffing crisis. The single most important determinant of child care quality is the presence of consistent, well-trained, and well-compensated child care providers.
Purpose:
- Improve the quality of early childhood education in child care centers, family child care homes, and registered ministries. Promote professional development of the early childhood workforce by increasing educational levels, increasing compensation, and decreasing staff turnover.
- T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA covers partial costs to help with the costs of college tuition, books, and travel. With some scholarship models, recipients also receive paid release time. Scholarships are based on the principle of partnership between the scholarship recipient, the sponsoring child care program, and the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project, all sharing the cost.
- In return for receiving a scholarship, each scholarship recipient must complete a certain amount of education, in the form of college coursework, during a prescribed contract period.
- All scholarship recipients receive increased compensation in the form of a bonus or raise, after completing a certain amount of coursework following the contract period.
- Recipients make a commitment to remain in the sponsoring child care program or the field of early childhood for 6 months to one year beyond the contract period, depending on the scholarship model.
- Applicant must work a minimum number of hours per week in a licensed, registered, or legally exempt early childhood setting.
- Applicants must have the sponsorship of their employing child care program
- Earn less than $12.00 per hour as a teacher
- Earn less than $15.00 per hour as a director or family child care provider
