Non-Formal CDA Class Being Offered in Wabash County

Is the non-formal Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) at Child Care Solutions a good match for you?

Assess your needs...

  • I am an Indiana resident
  • I am 18 years old or older
  • I have a high school diploma or GED
  • I am currently employed in a licensed, registered, or legally exempt early care and education setting
  • In the past 5 years, I have had at least 480 hours of experience working in a child care setting
  • I have thought about getting my CDA, but the idea of going back to school doesn't appeal to me
  • I am looking for a way to pursue an education in early childhood, but cannot commit to a full-time degree program
  • I find that not having a CDA is preventing me from achieving my professional goals
  • I need a CDA to achieve a higher level on Paths to QUALITY, the statewide quality rating system for child care
  • I don't do well with tests or being graded and the non-formal CDA offers no tests and no grades!
  • I want to get the training I need and strengthen my skills in a supportive environment
  • I want to build relationships and networking opportunities with fellow CDA candidates
  • I would like to prepare the CDA portfolio as I go through the program
  • I would like class at times that are convenient for me
  • I need affordable, professional development (out-of-pocket cost is only $100 payable in four payments of $25.00)
T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education and Compensation Helps)
Early Childhood INDIANA

The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project serves as an umbrella for educational scholarship opportunities for people working in licensed, registered, or legally exempt child care centers and homes in Indiana.

The T.E.A.C.H. project design is a partnership model, which requires the sharing of expenses between the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project, the sponsoring child care program, and the scholarship recipient.

Indiana, as well as most states, is experiencing a child care staffing crisis. The single most important determinant of child care quality is the presence of consistent, well-trained, and well-compensated child care providers.

Purpose:
  • Improve the quality of early childhood education in child care centers, family child care homes, and registered ministries. Promote professional development of the early childhood workforce by increasing educational levels, increasing compensation, and decreasing staff turnover.
Scholarship:
  • T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA covers partial costs to help with the costs of college tuition, books, and travel. With some scholarship models, recipients also receive paid release time. Scholarships are based on the principle of partnership between the scholarship recipient, the sponsoring child care program, and the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood INDIANA project, all sharing the cost.
Education:
  • In return for receiving a scholarship, each scholarship recipient must complete a certain amount of education, in the form of college coursework, during a prescribed contract period.
Compensation:
  • All scholarship recipients receive increased compensation in the form of a bonus or raise, after completing a certain amount of coursework following the contract period.
Commitment:
  • Recipients make a commitment to remain in the sponsoring child care program or the field of early childhood for 6 months to one year beyond the contract period, depending on the scholarship model.
Eligibility:
  • Applicant must work a minimum number of hours per week in a licensed, registered, or legally exempt early childhood setting.
  • Applicants must have the sponsorship of their employing child care program
  • Earn less than $12.00 per hour as a teacher
  • Earn less than $15.00 per hour as a director or family child care provider
How do I get more information or apply for a scholarship?

Applications can be requested several ways:
  1. Call to request a specific application at toll-free 800-657-7577

Tips from Your Paths to QUALITY Mentors

Tips from your Paths to QUALITY Mentors
Allison Hillis & Marleen Standback

Training & Education FQAs

Q: If my Foundations' training is more than a year old, do I need to take it again?
A: No! For Paths to QUALITY, you only need to prove (with a certificate) that you have taken the Foundations' training. However, you can retake this training once a year, if you would like it to count towards your annual training hours.

Q:Are there trainings that do NOT count towards my annual training hours?
A: Unfortunately, yes! Some of the trainings that do not count include, but are not limited to: Orientation 1 & 2, CPR/First Aid/ Universal Precautions, and mentoring time. Be sure to talk to your mentor if you have questions regarding countable training hours.

Q: As a Director, I provide In-Service trainings for my staff. Can this count towards training hours?
A: Yes, as long as you provide a certificate that included the title and date of training, clock hours, your signature, and the agenda (on the back). However, these training hours only apply to staff, not you as the Director.

Q: As a Center Director, how can I meet the CDA education standard when my staff's CDAs continue to expire?
A. There are several ways to meet this standard. Child Care Solutions' trainings, approved online programs, CEUs, and college courses can help your staff stay current or work towards renewal of their CDAs. Remember, for level 2 centers, only 25% of staff (including the Director) needs to have a current CDA. For level 3 centers, 50% of the staff (including the Director) needs a current CDA.

Be sure to talk to your mentor if you have questions regarding countable training hours for Paths to QUALITY!

Article Review – Tuning into Temperaments

Loud and boisterous or quiet and shy- we have all known children who could be labeled with one attitude or another. According to this Zero to Three Article these diverse personality traits are the result of a child’s temperament. Temperament shapes a child’s behavior throughout childhood. Subsequently, an understanding of it can improve one’s understanding of a child’s actions and perceptions. For example a child with a timid temperament who was slow to warm up to strangers might cry silently and pull away from attempts an unfamiliar adult makes at comforting. In contrast an assertive child might be quick to walk up to strangers and play without fear. Understanding the temperaments of the children in your life can help you understand how best to support them.

In Tuning into Temperaments there is an explanation of temperament types, as well as a clear illustration of what each type might look like. This article is a beautiful introduction to the concept of temperaments. Only 1 page long and easy to read, it would be wonderful to share with parents and child care professionals alike. Please follow the link to the article on the Zero to Three website.

If you are still interested in more information on temperaments please call Child Care Solutions to register for a Temperament training. This free training will cover the 9 temperament traits, discovering your temperament and the temperaments of those you are closest to, and exploring how to work with someone whose temperament is not a good match for you. The next temperament training will be in March, so call ahead to reserve your spot.
