This is part-time contract work of up to 40 hours a month. April is Autism Awareness Month. PBS NewsHour is presenting a six-part series on Autism. Check it out through the link below for local broadcast information. April 18 through 26, MacNeil will host Autism Today, a six-part series covering Autism issues from a variety of angles. April 18: Autism as a whole body experience. MacNeil brings viewers along on a visit with his daughter and grandson Nick in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to see how Autism affects the whole family. Nick experiences autism not just as a disorder in brain development but also as physical ailments affecting the whole body. April 19: Autism Prevalence. At the UC Davis MIND Institute in Sacramento, California, MacNeil sees the wide range of different behaviors that comprise the Autism Spectrum. Anthropologist Richard Grinker argues that the rising numbers of children with Autism is explained because conditions previously given other names are now included in the Autism Spectrum. April 20: Autism Causes. Robert MacNeil speaks with four leading researchers: Dr. Gerald Fischbach of the Simons Foundation, Dr. David Amaral of the MIND Institute, Dr. Martha Herbert of Harvard University and Dr. Craig Newschaffer of Drexel University. April 21: Autism Treatment. MacNeil visits two schools in New York - a public school in the Bronx teaching 700 children with Autism and a charter school created in Manhattan as a model of possibilities in educating children with Autism. April 25: Adults with Autism. Although federal law mandates educational services for children with Autism, there are virtually no services when they become adults. MacNeil profiles Zachary Hamrick in Mahwah, New Jersey, about to turn 21. April 26: Autism Policy. People with disabilities, their family members, and their advocates are invited to complete the 2010 ADA POLL, a survey about how Indiana communities are doing with implementation of the ADA. It’s important that your voices are heard when accessibility and discrimination issues are being addressed in your community! So don’t delay – let us know what you have to say!

The ADA has been in effect since 1990 - nearly 20 years have passed for communities to remove physical, programmatic, and attitudinal barriers that prevent people with disabilities from becoming active participating citizens. Progress has been made, but there is still need for further compliance. The 2010 ADA POLL asks Indiana citizens to identify how they view current implementation of the ADA in their own communities. Here is your opportunity to provide opinions and ideas about where to improve accessibility!
The results of the 2010 ADA POLL will be used to "grade" your community +on its response to the ADA and will become a tool to educate policy makers, administrators, and the general public about the ADA. We hope that you will join us in this effort to learn more about community responses to the ADA.
