What to do with toddlers...

Toddlers move fast, learn fast, and get into trouble fast. Their fast pace makes for great learning opportunities and fun, but it can also lead to challenges. When working with toddlers it is essential that there are a variety of appropriately challenging activities available for them. Finding activities that are appropriate can be difficult, and it is easy to get stuck in a rut. While checking out resource books from the lending library is a great idea, sometimes a quick reference is helpful. Early Childhood News has numerous articles that are great for quick reference. Click here to check out one of my favorites: 10 for 10: Ten Activities to Occupy Toddlers.

Economic Stimulus Briefing

Economic Stimulus Briefing
Taken from NACCRRA

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (P.L. 111-5). The new law contains funding to help states, communities, and families recover from the current recession. While a number of initiatives were funded to help in a myriad of ways, $2 billion was included for the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG), which is allocated to states based on a formula. Out of this funding, states must use at least 4 percent consistent with current law for quality related initiatives. In addition, another $255.1 million is to be used for quality related activities, of which $93.5 million is to be used for activities to improve the quality of infant and toddler care.

The Administration is committed to an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability. A new web site has been established(Recovery.gov) to track the new stimulus spending and to make allocations, competition for funding, award decisions, progress toward goals, and project evaluation information available to the public.

Crisis in the Kindergarten

Crisis in the Kindergarten: A New Report on the Disappearance of Play

New research shows that many kindergartens spend 2 to 3 hours per day instructing and testing children in literacy and math-with only 30 minutes per day or less for play. In some kindergartens there is no playtime at all. The same didactic, test-driven approach is entering preschools. But these methods, which are not well grounded in research, are not yielding long-term gains. Meanwhile, behavioral problems and preschool expulsion, especially for boys, are soaring. Read and comment on the Alliance's new report, Crisis in the Kindergaretn: Why Children Need to Play in School. Please click here to read an 8 page summary of the report.
